Mystery Tackle Box Review

This week I'll be reviewing Mystery Tackle Box.  For those of you that don't know, it's a subscription service that sends you a box full of bass fishing gear once a month for $15 (they are planning to eventually offer gear for others types of fishing too).  The business model interested me immediately, but I initially baulked at the price.  Then I stumbled onto the first month for $5 offer that has apparently been available for some time (coupon code: GET499).  Because you can cancel your subscription at any time, I figured that this was the perfect excuse to try it out.

My first tackle box included:
  • 1 Sashimi Shad Suspending
  • 3 Muddbugg C-Floaters
  • 3 4" KVD Dream Shots
  • 3 Cane Thumpers
  • 2 4/0 Ultra Lock EWG Hooks
From my research, this is a typical mix of products: one hard bait, a few soft baits, and some terminal tackle. The lure in this box retails for $14.99, so even if I paid the full $15 the box is well worth its price.  As a bonus, there is no shipping, even for those in Canada- it took about one week for the box to get to Kingston, Ontario.

Some people may dislike the fact that you don't get to choose which products you get- the 'mystery' is simply a branding trick that allows the company to sell you whatever they have in an attempt to minimize inventory related costs and headaches.  Although this may very well be true to some degree, I actually really like the lack of choice.  It forces me to try out lures that I would otherwise avoid- especially those, like soft plastics, that aren't my confidence baits.  I don't think I'll keep my subscription year long, but I will probably order a few of these boxes every year for this reason alone- to try to increase my fishing arsenal.  I should also point out that the equipment they send isn't just the leftover, unwanted inventory of suppliers- it's new, good quality gear.

The tackle box also comes with a card detailing the retail price of the products and how to use them.  So, for example, it gives this description of the Muddbugg C-Floater: "The claws float upward mimicking a real crawfish in a defensive position.  Rig it texas, carolina, use as a jig trailer or drop shot it!"  The descriptions aren't particularly useful, but the card also gives you a link to the Mystery Tackle Box website which sometimes gives you better advice and, for some products, links to videos.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with Mystery Tackle Box.  At first I baulked at the price, but so far I definitely think that each box is easily worth at least $15.  Like I've said, subscribing to this service will make you try baits you would otherwise avoid, so it'll probably make you a better and more well-rounded fisherman.  I will probably cancel my subscription after one or two more months, just because I don't need 12 of these a year, but I'll probably order several of these every year just to stay on top of new and different types of gear.  Can't wait to try these out on the water- bass season is only about 3 months away in Ontario!
