Live Bait Fishing

A friend of mine asked me how to tie a rig for live bait fishing. So instead of describing it in a lengthy way, I'll just post it here. I am not in favor of live rigging but you can't deny the fact that live baits works best. Some times when all else fails, live bait is the only way to catch predatory fishes like Barramundi and Giant Snakeheads.

One of the rigs that I have learned from the locals is this rig. I'll just call it Live Bait Floating Rig. It can be used at ponds & lakes that has low currents.

To assemble this rig, you'll need the following:

Size 1/0 or 2/0 circle hook (depending on size of bait & target fish).

30lb to 50lb mono or better, 100% fluorocarbon leader.

Oversize weighted float
Trace Wire

The step by step on how to tie a live bait floating rig.
1. First, strip out about 1m of mono leader. Do a Dropper loop at the mid-section.
2. Connect the weighted float on the longer end of leader using a Clinched knot.
3. Take a 5" strand of trace wire, snell it to the hook.
4. Lastly, join the trace wire & hook to leader using Albright knot. Done!

Popular live baits used.
Walking Catfish (Keli) - This is almost the de-facto standard for Giant Snakehead (Toman) fishing here in Malaysia. The fish is easy to transport without the need for air pumps. They also last a long time. They are usually sold for RM 0.60 for 7" sizes. Rig it on the pectoral fin.

Tilapia - This is also a popular live bait if catfish is unavailable. The hardy Tilapia would also survive for quite some time provided you aerate the tank with an air pump. Usually sold for RM 0.60 for 5" sizes. Rig it to the pectoral fin.

Prawns - This is a popular bait for Barramundi (Siakap) fishing. Prawns are rather expensive, usually sold for RM 1 / prawn. Rig it to the upper tail section avoiding the nerves.

Lastly, always rig the live bait avoiding the internal organs to maximize the bait's life span. Here is an excellent illustration from Shore Fishing Puerto Rico's blog. Normally, I would just hook it on the pectoral fin & this will be good enough. Good luck & tight lines.
