Mystery Tackle Box Review #2
Before reading this post, read my first review of Mystery Tackle Box if you haven't already. In this second post, I just want to describe what I received in my April tackle box and what I like and dislike about this month's package.
This month's tackle box includes:
This month's tackle box includes:
Let's talk first about the Stabber Crankbait. The Mystery Tackle Box pamphlet tells us that the lure retails for about $15-16. But as you can see in the link above, the lure is currently on clearance on the Bass Pro Shops website, and is selling there for about $10. The customer reviews on that site are basically all negative, which explains the decrease in price. I don't want to totally bash this lure before throwing it- it may very well turn out to be an effective bait for me- but putting a lure with so many negative reviews into a package doesn't look good for a company that claims to have tournament fishermen reviewing every bait that goes into each box. Seems to me that Mystery Tackle Box got a really low price on these lures and couldn't resist putting them in to increase their margins.
The other disappointing thing about this month's box is the terminal tackle, that is, the hooks. Last month I received the exact same hooks. I get that the hooks may very well be good to use with the Baby Rodents, but it would've been nice to get something different, like tube jigs.
The plastic baits in the box are good quality ones. As I said in my last post, what I particularly like about Mystery Tackle Box is that it has forced me to add into my arsenal some of the baits- particularly soft plastics- that I'm not comfortable fishing, which will hopefully make me a better and more well-rounded angler. That said, partly because I'm somewhat disappointed in this month's box, and partly because I spend time fishing for other species and don't want to spend too much money on just bass gear, I've decided to suspend my Mystery Tackle Box account. I'll probably order one or two of these every year but not more than that unless I see that the company is doing something different that makes it worthwhile to order more. It was nice getting the first box for $5 but, having paid full price for the second, I'm no longer convinced that $15 for this kind of box is really that good of a deal.
On another note, bass season in Ontario is about two months away! Time to start getting excited.
