Simcoe Bass Opener Live Blog: Day 4

Another late start. Should've done some fishing before the thunderstorm rolled through, but no reason to dwell on that. I was worried that the heavy rain would shut down the smallmouth, and seriously considered going for perch, particularly because of the wind. But because it was blowing in a favourable direction, and because the water was still fairly clear, I decided to work some docks, hoping that some smallies were in shallow close to cover. I tied on a white jig head and put on a yellow grub, similar to the one my dad used last night to bring in this beauty.

In about an hour and a half, from roughly 11 am to 12:30, I caught two small bass. And man, were they ever close to cover. Accurate casting and boat control are paramount today - were it not for the wind, I'd even consider skipping some baits under docks.  Here's the first little guy:
I tried the other side of the bay today too, but the drop offs are steeper on that side, and the fish so far have seemed to be in flatter areas - so I went back to the east side of the bay. After breaking off the white jig head, I put on a yellow one, once again with a yellow grub to catch this one:
No hogs today yet - but on the positive side, I've caught fish using many different techniques this weekend. I just hope to get at least one more big guy before the long weekend ends!

Afternoon

The boat went early and so I didn't do anything other than dock fish in the afternoon. Saw a big guy swimming around but couldn't get him to bite. Here's a breakdown of how I caught fish this long weekend:
I still need to do a much better job of consistently locating big fish. On the positive side, I'm starting to become quite confident using a number of different presentations.
