Aaron Alexis: The Case of Prevention Not Undertaken

Once again another tragedy occurs involving multiple victims this time at a Washington Navy Yard where twelve people were murdered by a deranged shooter, Aaron Alexis, age 34 of Fort Worth, Texas who was a civilian military contractor and who received a general discharge from the Navy Reserve in 2011 after a shooting incident in his home. He was previously arrested in Seattle in 2004 for shooting out the tires of a vehicle.
Once again, the anti-gun folks raised an outcry that this could have been abated if Congress had passed the gun ban law proposed by Senator Dianne Feinstein and her cohorts in Washington. The weapons used by Alexis was a shotgun, handgun, and not an AR-15 as originally reported by the inaccurate media.
Once again, such an occurrence happened in a “gun-free” zone where the victims had no chance to defend themselves and obviously mass murderers like Alexis choose because they know no one will shoot back. Once again firearms are blamed and the mainstream media, mouthpiece of Big Government; the Washington Times reported:
Among President Clinton's first acts upon taking office in 1993 was to disarm U.S. Soldiers on military bases. In March 1993, the Army imposed regulations forbidding military personnel from carrying their personal firearms and making it almost impossible for commanders to issue firearms to soldiers in the U.S. for personal protection. For the most part, only military police regularly carry firearms on base, and their presence is stretched thin by high demand for MPs in war zones.
It is a paranoid government indeed that disarms its own military personnel and disregards the Second Amendment.
Once again, Obama and friends jump the gun [excuse the unintentional pun and purposeful cliché] and immediately point out that this incident proves that disarming citizens is for their benefit … like tyrants of history stated. Ignored was the fact that Alexis has committed crimes involving firearms twice before this tragedy occurred – and the authorities did not ensure that the veteran received proper mental evaluation and therapy, as well as ensuring he had no further access to obtain or keep firearms. That would have made too much sense. The old adage an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure [Benjamin Franklin]applies here; besides, if a citizen commits to unlawful uses of firearms they should lose their Second Amendment privileges. Background checks before purchase of firearms has a definite purpose, and that is to prevent those with criminal backgrounds and mental disorder be prevented from purchasing firearms [legally]. That, of course, does not apply to criminals who do not purchase their firearms to ply their illegal trade through legal channels. If firearms are taken away from lawful citizens that leaves an open invitation and field for criminals to commit violent crimes unabated. Law enforcement would be allowed to be armed, but they cannot be everywhere when needed and almost 100% of the time show up after the violent crime has been committed; not being able to prevent violent acts.
Dianne Feinstein, in her progressive political jargon stated:
This is one more event to add to the litany of massacres that occur when a deranged person or grievance killer is able to obtain multiple weapons – including a military-style assault rifle – and kill many people in a short amount of time. When will enough be enough?
Once again, Senator Feinstein ignores the fact that prevention by confiscating Alexis's firearms he should not have possessed and preventing any other purchases of firearms – plus ensuring that Alexis received therapy for his obvious mental problems would have prevented him from access to the Navy Yard or be in possession of or procure firearms. He should not have had a clearance and be on a list that prevents purchase of firearms.
Once again, like in the Trayvon Martin case, President Obama had something to say, hastily put together before the facts were presented:
We're confronting – yet another – mass shooting, and today it happened on a military installation in our nation's capital.
Remember what Obama stated when running for office the first time? …
a clear paraphrase from Saul Alinsky, a socialist-progressive “community organizer” that Obama admires and uses as a guideline with his own socialist agenda from the book Rules for Radicals. The author, of course, is Saul Alinsky.
Emily Millerat Washington Times[and NewsMax] sees clearly through the Obama scare tactics that are tools for the Sociocrats who call themselves Democrats and the RINOs of the GOP who go along for the ride.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the U.S. Does not even have a particularly high murder rate compared to other nations. In 2011, the U.S. Had an intentional homicide rate of 4.7 per 100,000 population, placing it roughly in the middle of the list of nations of the world. Honduras had the highest intentional homicide rate (91.6) and Monaco the lowest (0.0). …
But that is not the picture painted by the American progressive socialist's movement; and of course, they focus upon the rare occurrences, with the aid of more than willing mainstream media, when mass murders occur. The media totally ignores the daily reports of citizens using firearms to save lives – legally defending themselves, property, and others; of which at least one story can be told weekly. It is more sensational and with political purpose as a tool to focus upon incidents that help prove their point. The same goes for the subject of racism. Plastering headline news with days of “evaluation” from the media, one is pummeled by the news of incidents like Trayvon Martin; but crimes, obviously committed with racial hatred of blacksvs whites, is kept quiet and minimum coverage. Like the story of the Australian young man attending college in the United States being shot in the back while jogging – just because he was white and an easy target.
It is obvious that the media cannot (more likely will not) connect the dots when it comes to such attacks; always occurring in a “gun-free zone”.
The naval yard incident is most likely not a terrorist incident; but the shooting at Fort Hood by a jihadist that the US military officials allowed to remain in the US Army despite clear warning signals was deemed as, by President Obama, a workplace violence incident.
Another thing overlooked by media the like: what happened to the security at the naval yard where a person could enter the premises with three firearms and ammunition?
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Dissolving Second Amendment rights is not a cure – it just leads to bigger problems.
And, yes, Aaron Alexis COULD have been Barack Obama's son.
As an article at Black Sphere pointed out: the shooter took away more than lives ... he has provided reasons for anti-firearm people to take away firearms from lawful citizens and thus the rights of the Second Amendment.
Disarming the rest of the populace because of the unlawful action of people like Alexis and shooters in Connecticut and Colorado is clearly not because disarming will prevent such occurrences; but because there are people who think they can legislate and prevent crime by removing the ability of the People to defend themselves, others, and property.
Quick on the draw, when it comes to taking away citizens' rights ... Obama is on the executive order trick again. If he intends to fix the broken background check system, then do so. This incident could have been prevented if the shooter had received proper mental therapy and kept away from firearms - clearly due to his violent history and mental disorder.
