The RM 6 Pond

I was at Rawang recently and by chance pass by Kundang village. Then I recalled somewhere here lies a paypond that costs only RM 6 to fish. Yes, you read it right. Ringgit Malaysia 6 to fish. Now normally I would be skeptical about it because the last time I went to an RM 5 pond in Tambun, Ipoh to fish, I went home not even seeing a fish, so don't even mention hooking onto one. Now, coming back to this place.

To get to this place takes a bit of driving & navigation skills as the place is not easy to find. First, you need to be familiar with Kundang area. It is also relatively near to the famous Exotic Fishing pond at Rawang. For those who know where Tow Foo fishing is, (if you are coming from Kundang Village) then you only need to travel another 3km further into Kundang New Village itself. From there, look for a left turning with a signboard at the junction, "Kolam Memancing Kundang". From here onward, it is a straight road going another 2km passing farmlands. Pay attention to your right side as you should see a small signboard beside a dirt road that reads "Kolam RM 6 Kok Fishing". Just turn in & follow the signboards as you'll need to make a few turns driving offroad terrain before arriving at the fishing centre. This place reminds me of Ipoh ex-mining ponds.

First impression of this place is, it is a farm. The owner converted his ponds to allow fishing. Agriculture is still ongoing along this piece of land. Fishing fees is RM 6 per rod, you can fish from 9am till 8pm in the evening. Baits are provided free of charge as pile of dried grounded soya waste are provided all around the ponds. As a bonus, an angler is allowed to take 1kg weight of Tilapia home. This means if you catch 2 x 500g Tilapia, it is still free to take home. Not bad eh? It doesn't get any better than this! They open from 9am till 8pm.

If you choose to take fish home, there is a price to pay for each species of fish. The usual price of fish based on per kg weight.

Photo above is the main entrance cum registration counter. Facility wise, the place is a little short on comforts but avid anglers usually don't care much about such minor details. Toilets are available in the form of kampung style outhouses are built at each pond & there is a basin with clean tap water for cleaning. The fishing huts are rather crude and ineffective. Better to bring along raincoats or a large umbrella if you're the feminine type. Cleanliness is at minimum but then again, this is a farm, what do you expect? F&B is basic, they do sell mineral water, soft drinks, cup noodles & biscuits too.

Now all this talk about the place, what about the fishing? Well, I'm happy to say, fishing here is productive. In fact, I was only here for just 30 mins, I saw 2 anglers landing small Tilapia. Twice an angler tackle a big fish & broke his line. 1 angler successfully landed a 4kg Patin. How's that for productive fishing? I believe fishing here would be productive provided anglers do their part to care for the fishes. According to the operator, all forms of fishing are allowed. The only rules here that apply are no treble hooks. There are whoppers here in the range of 6 to 15kg. That is great seeing that the operator charges only a small fee to fish.

There are 3 ponds here stocked with a multitude of freshwater species. The first two ponds are located right next to the entrance/registration counter with Pond A being the smaller one, Pond B being medium sized & Pond C, the largest, about 50m further in from the entrance. All 3 ponds are stocked with a good variety of fishes. If you are a regular paypond fisho, you'll know the species are the "usual suspects". To name a few, Tilapia, Patin, Rohu, Jelawat, Keli, Lampam & of course, my favorite, the Pacu. They even stock 2 species of carps here, the Bighead Carp (Tongsan) and the Grass Carp (Kap Rumput).

I think this is an ideal place for low budget anglers & newbies hoping to hone their skills. This place will give other more well established payponds like Fish Valley & Sek24 a run for their money. As for me, I think I'll be back...soon.
