NPO Gear Review- Field & Stream Latitude Long Sleeve Shirt & Tidal Pant

By Tyler Frantz

Summer is made for waterside adventure. Be it casting from a favorite lakeshore, paddling the local river, or sailing the open sea, there’s no better way to spend a sunny day outdoors than exploring the water.

But it’s important to stay comfortable, cool and covered from the sun’s harmful rays when soaking up the scenery, and Field & Stream has the perfect combo to do the job.

Over the past few months, I’ve had the opportunity to put F&S gear’s Latitude Long Sleeve Shirt and Tidal Pants to the test in a variety of outdoor situations, and I am super impressed with the quality and design of these products.

For starters the Latitude Shirt features quick-drying polyester for enhanced comfort. It has a 3-pocket design, featuring two chest pockets with hook & loop closures, plus a zippered Napoleon pocket, which is great for stashing a cell phone or fly box.

There are also two additional gear slots above the chest pockets and a rod keeper, plus convertible sleeves that roll up and simply snap in place in seconds- a feature I particularly loved, rather than fighting one-handed with a button and slot closure.

The shirt utilizes SmartCool technology that works as a refrigerant for a cooler, more comfortable feel during warm temperatures, and SmartWick technology, which absorbs sweat and moisture away from the skin, keeping you cool and dry.

Best of all, the fabric is rated at UPF 50+ Sun Protection to help shield and protect skin from harmful UV rays during extended sun exposure, eliminating the need to worry about greasy sun screens when you’re trying to focus on the fishing.

The Tidal Pants similarly feature the same UPF 50+ rating, and they come in a four-way stretch technical fabric to allow for ample mobility and comfort when bending down to reach the tackle box and cooler or to release that hefty lunker.

The pants also come with an 8-pocket design, which includes two hand pockets, two cargo pockets, two back pockets, one front reinforced utility pocket and one back reinforced utility pocket. I didn’t have to worry about losing my wallet or pocket-knife while out and about in these pants, and the pockets are all located at sensible places that don’t impede movement like other brands.

As a bonus, there is also a removable cloth belt that is included to ensure a secure fit, and double reinforced heel fabric so they can stand up to lots of wear and tear.

But the best part about these pants are that they are not only breathable, allowing body vapors to escape, but they utilize a HydroRepel system to repel mists, light rains and water droplets.

As a kayaker with an open hull system, I used to get my lap soaked any time I took my kayak out on the water as droplets beaded down my paddle into my hull. But while wearing these pants, I remained completely dry which really won me over and made me want to purchase another pair.

I also wore these light and airy britches under my waders while fishing for trout, and their breathability and comfort really came in handy.

Needless to say, I give the Field & Stream Latitude Long Sleeve Shirt and Tidal Pants a huge A+ on comfort, durability and design. The price point isn’t bad either. You can pick up the whole combo for right around $100, and believe me- it’s well worth it!
