Tackle Early Mornings Afield with Rip It Energy

My bedside smart phone alarm buzzed and vibrated at 3:45 a.m., marking the start of another rainy Saturday in May. For the Pennsylvania spring turkey hunter, early morning wakeup calls pretty much serve as prerequisites for success- especially for weekend warriors like me afforded just one day per workweek to get it done.

Aside from freelance outdoor writing, I’m a full time teacher, plus a spring season soccer coach, so it’s not exactly easy to take a day off at the end of the school year. With no Sunday hunting in PA, Saturdays are all I’ve got, so rising before the crack of dawn on most other folks’ “sleep in day” is a process I’ve come to embrace.

It typically includes standing sleepy-eyed around my coffee maker, waiting for liquid energy to brew, so I can finally get out the door and head to my hunting destination.

Even so, the coffee is always too hot to drink immediately, so I end up driving with the lid off my tumbler, risking a spill in my truck’s center console, just trying to cool the coffee to a drinkable temperature before I can get the caffeine fix I desire.

That was until I discovered Rip It Energy drinks.

This past Saturday was different, as there was no pacing around the kitchen floor waiting for my morning energy boost. As soon as I was dressed and ready, I loaded the truck, grabbed two cans of Rip It from my fridge, and headed out the door.

I’ll admit I haven’t tried Rip It Energy’s full line of 18 flavors in its entirety, but each of the five flavors I did drink thus far tasted great. In fact, I haven’t had a single bad one yet, and we all know some energy drinks aren’t exactly known for their quality of flavor.

Offered at a fraction of the cost of competitors, Rip It Energy’s 16-ounce can packs a full 80 mg punch of caffeine,  but it does so in a way that tastes refreshing and light. One tasted like grape soda, another like fruit punch, and a third was almost like a lemon lime zest. I certainly didn’t mind downing one on my drive to the turkey woods knowing it would help me stay alert.

After weathering a rainstorm in the blind for several hours, I decided to pack up and try a new location. But before trekking up the mountain, I pounded another can of Rip It, which gave me just the boost I needed to make the climb in search of a big old longbeard.

While the birds were uncooperative on this particular outing, I felt plenty of energy on limited sleep, covering more than two miles, mostly uphill, and I’m sure Rip It Energy helped contribute to that.

I consider myself in pretty good shape for taking on the wild outdoors, but it sometimes helps to have a little extra boost of power for tackling those early mornings afield, which often provide the best opportunities to score on the day’s game plan.

Tips for hunting spring gobblers in the rain

Turkeys, like humans don’t particularly enjoy being out in the rain, but it’s a necessary facet of life. They may tend to stay on the roost a little later than usual, and they often remain tight-lipped and are unwilling to gobble, simply because they don’t want to give away their location without being able to hear predators approaching.

In areas with mixed cover, try to focus on forest openings, clearings or low cut fields, as birds will gravitate to these areas with increased visibility, where they can pick at bugs, grubs and worms for a mid-morning meal.

A pop-up blind can be a life saver in damp weather as it will not only help keep you dry, but also your friction calls, which won’t work if they are wet. Consider using a diaphragm mouth call, but don’t overdo it.

Have patience, as birds may respond to light calling if you place a few decoys within sight, but they will often come in silent, so keep a watchful eye. Don’t expect many toms to be vocal in the rain, but if you do hear a few gobbles, you’ve probably found a hot one. Stay ready and make your shot count!
