Unfortunately, cold weather ruined my plans to do some more
lake trout fishing in May. Instead of spending time on the water, I had to keep busy
designing a lipless crankbait. But a trip to Detroit on the long weekend meant I had to cross something off my bucket list: fishing for smallmouth on Lake St. Clair.

Because the season is still closed in Southern Ontario, we had to take a trip to the American side to fish with guide Kevin Long. Make sure to
check him out if you're fishing for bass or musky in the area. We mostly relied on the following techniques:

One of many largemouth |
I started the day off by catching a nice smallmouth, but after that, it was mostly medium-sized largemouth hitting our baits in three to six feet of water. We caught well over 20 bass, and a few pike too.

After a hot start to the day, the fishing slowed down. We really had to work hard for the last few fish. Fortunately, I capped the day off by catching a nice smallmouth that absolutely annihilated my spinnerbait just a few feet away from the boat!

We had a great day on the water with Kevin. Fishing with a guide is a great way to hone your technique. But once you do that, you've got to go out on your own and test yourself...
