PAEP: Carol Collier & Natural Lands Trust Win Karl Mason & Walter Lyon Awards
The PA Association of Environmental Professionals Thursday announced Carol Collier is the winner of the 2016 Karl Mason Award and the Natural Lands Trust is the winner of the Walter Lyon Award.
The Awards will be presented at the PAEP Conference held this year at Toftrees Resort in State College PA at the awards luncheon on May 12.
Carol Collier - Senior Advisor for Watershed Management & Policy, The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University: Carol is an experienced leader in regional watershed management and planning.
She holds an active leadership role supporting the work of the Patrick Center for Environmental Research in monitoring and improving the health of watersheds in the Delaware River Basin.
She acts as the principal liaison for outreach and program development to partners and high level contacts in government, business, non-governmental organizations and funding organizations.
Before joining the Academy, Carol served for more than 15 years as executive director of the Delaware River Basin Commission.
Before joining DRBC, she was executive director of Pennsylvania’s 21st Century Environment Commission and regional director of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Southeast Regional Office.
In 1997 she was presented the Touchstone Award from the Society of Women Environmental Professionals and in 1998 the Woman of Distinction Award from the Philadelphia Business Journal.
In 2007 the American Water Resources Association presented her with the Mary H. Marsh Medal for exemplary contributions to the protection and wise use of the nation’s water resources.
In 2014, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded her the Bronze Order of the DeFleury Medal.
She is a member of her township’s environmental protection advisory board, on the Boards of the American Water Resources Association (President, 2013), the U.S. Water Alliance, and recent past chair of the Board for the Pinchot Institute for Conservation.
She teaches environmental management courses at the University of Pennsylvania and has published on environmental and water-related topics.
She has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives and the Pennsylvania Legislature.
In 2004 she was a member of a nine-person U.S./China/Japan team to assist the People’s Republic of China with river basin management. She has also participated in water management and sustainable forest practice events along the Yangtze River in China and in the rainforests of Ecuador.
Natural Lands Trust - Natural Lands Trust is the southeast Pennsylvania region’s oldest and largest conservation organization, protecting the forests, fields, wetlands, and streams that are essential to the sustainability and quality of life in eastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.
NLT owns and manages 42 nature preserves in 13 counties, holds conservation easements and other restrictions on more than 22,000 acres, partners with municipalities (more than 150 in 26 counties in Pennsylvania to date) to support their own open space efforts, and helps landowners steward the natural resources on their land.
The NLT takes a large-scale view of conservation priorities while working locally in hundreds of communities. Currently, NLT is actively involved in every county in southeastern Pennsylvania as well as the Poconos and the South Jersey Bayshore.
Natural Lands Trust has earned accreditation from the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance.
The land trust accreditation program recognizes organizations that meet national standards for excellence, upholds the public trust, and ensures that preservation efforts are permanent. In 2015, NLT was awarded re-accreditation.
