GenieJar is a bait angler's wish come true

GenieJar is a bait angler's wish-come-true

By Tyler Frantz

March makes one “think spring,” and thinking spring often results in thinking fishing too. It’s almost hard to believe, but Pennsylvania’s southeastern region trout anglers will be hitting the water in less than a month, so early season preparations are likely already in the works.

Many regard the popular threaded minnow technique as a highly effective fishing tactic. But keeping minnows alive can be a real chore, and constantly rooting around in a cold bait bucket for fresh fatheads can leave one wet-sleeved, frustrated and wishing for something simpler.

The solution to this problem is a nifty Pennsylvania-made fishing product available to live bait anglers this season called the GenieJar by CarLyd Fishing.

The GenieJar takes the concept of a minnow bucket to a whole new level with its ingenious patent pending design, inventively simplifying the process of storing, maintaining and retrieving live fishing bait.

Available in two sizes (the 17-ounce Cipher and the 30-oz Optimus), GenieJars are basically durable plastic cylinders featuring lids on both ends. One end is used for emptying and filling the container with water, while the other end is used for loading and selecting minnows.

But here’s the kicker- a mesh basket located within the cylinder traps the minnows inside whenever an angler wishes to replenish the GenieJar with fresh, oxygenated water from the fill end. Meanwhile, a floating disc attached to the bottom of the basket lifts minnows vertically to the angler’s fingertips like an elevator when the select end is held upright.

The design is pretty brilliant to say the least, and it’s obvious the product developer put a lot of thought into creating the premier storage container for bait anglers.

“With over 35-years of live bait fishing experience, I was tired of having to settle for the products available before the GenieJar,” said Brad Myers, owner of Carlyd Fishing and inventor of the GenieJar.

“I was frustrated having to suffer through cold, wet hands and losing precious bait every time I needed to replace low oxygenated water so my minnows wouldn’t die,” Myers explained. “I was also tired of products only lasting one year.”

So Myers took a chance, invested his time, talents and money, and did something about it.

His company, located in East Earl, PA, seemingly covered all the details a bait angler could wish for in a minnow container. GenieJars are built from tough, clear plastic so an angler can visually keep tabs on minnows. The design is sleek and easily fits into a vest or cargo pocket. Plus, it includes a lanyard to accommodate the walking or wading angler.

Options in addition to the two different volume sizes include two color choices- red or black, and an available KCI model without the lanyard so it can sit flat in a kayak, canoe or ice-fishing hut cup holder for easy access.

The ease of use, especially the floating lift basket, makes the GenieJar a great choice for kids and seniors, because it conveniently brings the minnows to the angler without having to fish around in a bucket for rogue bait that always seems to slip away. Plus, the affordable price-point of less than $20 is an added bonus.

Myers stated that he himself, as well as the entire CarLyd staff, loves using the GenieJar because it improves upon age old-fishing standards by adding functionality and convenience through creative American-made innovation.

            And it’s catching on.

“We recently received a really good product review via a video from Missouri Secrets Tackle and an endorsement from NWT Professional Angler Wade While,” Myers said optimistically. “We also signed a deal with FishUSA to handle all of our online sales, and Don Jacobs at WNEP-TV is featuring the GenieJar weekly on a new product give-away portion of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Life show airing on Sundays.”

“Things are going well for us, and we are always looking for distributors,” Myers explained. “In a few weeks, online sales will be carried exclusively by FishUSA, but anglers can find or ask for our products at their favorite fishing tackle or sporting goods retailers as well.”

"Our main reason for bringing this product line in to our store is that there is nothing like it on the market," said Corey Shields of FishUSA. "It also creates a user experience while fishing that cannot be duplicated with any product in the fishing industry at this time."

We are finding anglers are using the GenieJar for more than just minnows, Myers added. “It works great for leeches, hellgrammites, crayfish, and we have reports of some anglers using the GenieJar to carry sand fleas at the shore.”

“The fishing industry needs manufacturers like CarLyd to challenge the status quo and not stand for what is available now. We need to use today’s technology to develop and provide better products,” Myers said.
