Aimpoint: Is It The Right Choice for Quick Target Acquisition?
Aimpoint, a Swedish manufacturer, was the first to produce an electronic version of the iron sight system. It has continued to provide innovations in firearm optics and has expanded its catalog of quality optics introducing a new generation of compact model optics in the fall of 2014. It has also offered AR shooters optics that are tailored for their customized firearms. However, overall performance is what counts as the comparison video demonstrates at the end of this article.
The Micro T-2 Sight is an updated version of the Micro T-1. The Micro series was introduced in 2007 by Aimpoint making it a worldwide standard for compact reflex sights.
Law enforcement and military have used them because of its compact size, durability, and long battery life. The change in the Micro is a new sight housing that allows the addition of front and rear protective flip covers and anti-reflection devices, as well as protection for the sight's adjustment turrets that increases its rugged construction. Another great thing about the T-2 is it has been designed to work with a variety of firearms, from pistol to shotgun to rifle. The T-2 is called the Aimpoint Carbine Optic, designed for tactical rifles. It has a two-minute of angle red dot that provides fast target acquisition and accuracy at varied distances. It is waterproof and comes with a constant-use battery that lasts 5 years versus the ACO battery that lasts one year.
Another difference between the T1 and T-2 is the MSRP. The ACO sells for $393 and the Micro T-2 has an MSRP of $846; but everyone knows that quality optics cost more than those with less features and less quality. The magnification is 1x with an adjustment of one click, 1/2-inches at 100 yards. The battery is the 3V Lithium, type CR2032. The housing is extruded high strength aluminum that is 2.7 inches long, weighing just 3.4 ounces. The ACO is a bit heavier at 7.8 ounces using type 2L76 or DL1/3N 3V Lithium battery and 5.1 inches long.
The Aimpoint optics feature sights that work in all light conditions. Fully submersible and has been tested for use in arctic and tropic weather conditions according to the manufacturer. The mechanical switch and push buttons will not freeze and easy to use when wearing gloves. Settings can be changed while aiming through the sight.
Some of Aimpoint's models are compatible with NVD [night-vision devices], which gives them even greater capability range. When used with a 3rd generation NVD the sight picture is clear and bright. It's versatility offers an NVD mounted behind the sight on a rail or helmet-mounted night vision devices. However, it did not test well for night tactical use or night home defense conditions.
The following video compares leading quick optics reflex sights with several important tests. Aimpoint does not come out the winner with Aimpoint coming in at last place when it comes to price comparison and MSE winning ...
