Berkley Powerbait Rattle Shrimp

Finally had some spare time to do some blogging. I've been very busy at work for the last whole year. Now back to talking about fishing!

Recently, I got hold of a pack of Berkley SP in the shape of a shrimp. I was skeptical at first of it's effectiveness as I was more in favor of Zerek's Live Shrimp which is a proven SP for saltwater fishing. I've landed many Barramundi at Jugra RM 3 pond over the last 2 years with that lure. Being the adventurous type, I gave the Rattle Shrimp a try on one evening at Jugra RM 3.

Holding the SP in my hand, I didn't really like it at first glance. It is stiff and not realistic looking. But being a Berkley product as well as having the Powerbait formula infused, I wanted to see what this lure can do. The one that I had was a 3.5" model. The SP comes pre-rigged with a strong solid hook, something I really appreciate as I've had bad experience using pre-rigged SPs that comes with weak hooks. A strong solid sharp hook would not fail the angler when he hooks up a whopper. The lure is also quite heavy, I estimate it to weigh at least 20g which means it would be easy casting. A heavier lure will cast further and more accurately. The lure also feels quite sturdy, this SP can take a beating without break up too soon.
The one big advantage that the Berkley Powerbait Rattle Shrimp has that no other pre-rigged SP lures has is the built in rattles. Shake the lure and you'll hear the noise generated by the ball bearings. This is a fish attracting tool.

First cast, get snapper. Berkley Powerbait Rattle Shrimp.
So after examining the SP for a good 5 mins, it was time to send it into the waters to let the fish decide if they like it too. First pond that I went was the snapper pond next to the grouper pond. I walked up to one of the corners of the rectangular shape pond and make a long cast. The lure flies out nicely all the way up to 20m from where I stand, lands in the water with a minor splash, hits the bottom almost instantly. Waited for a few seconds, twitched it a few times then I reel in slowly with regular pause. The weight of the lure makes it very easy to work the bottom.
Gotcha! Mr Snapper.

Halfway through reeling in the lure, I got a take! This is still first cast! I gave it a gentle yank to set the hook and fought the fish slow and steady. Brought in a 1.3kg red snapper. Not bad! I am impressed! Although this wasn't the first snapper that I've caught at Jugra RM 3 ponds, this was the largest one so far. After securing the snapper, I held the lure for an inspection. Being a Powerbait product, I was quite sure there would be some damage to the SP after being taken by a toothy snapper but surprisingly, the SP had no damage at all! Now I am starting to love this lure. I highly recommend those who enjoys SP fishing to try out the Powerbait Rattle Shrimp for saltwater fishing.

Caught a John Snapper too on the Rattle Shrimp
