Dotty Lake Fishing
And so my quest to fish on every lake in the Huntsville area continues. So far, I've been to Harp Lake, Fairy Lake, Lake of Bays, and Mary Lake. I decide to head further north this week, choosing Dotty Lake as my first destination. I do some research and find out there's some decent bass fishing in the area. Zone 15 fishing regulations also stipulate that you can fish for lake trout year round: which either suggests there are lots of them, or maybe none at all. I take one baitcasting rod with a spinnerbait tied on and a spinning rod with my typical lake trout fishing set-up.
I start at the south end of the lake where there's a boat launch and a decent-sized parking area. There's a lot of natural shoreline here, submerged trees and lily pads so I start covering water with my spinnerbait. After 10 minutes or so, I catch my first and, ultimately, last bass of the day. Not a huge one, but it hit hard. I move north slowly along the shoreline but don't have any more luck. When I come back here to focus on bass, I'll make sure to bring my flipping stick to work the weeds and trees more patiently.
Changing things up, I start trolling with a dressed silver Mepps Aglia #2. From my observations, the north part of the lake seems to be the deepest. But near the middle of the lake is where I get lucky. I don't think I'm fishing particularly deep, so I'm somewhat shocked that I see a laker at the end of my line - though the weather has cooled considerably in the last week or so. There's a big smile on my face: this is my first lake trout since moving to Huntsville.
Unfortunately, my day ends shortly after that. I snag my lure and cut the line. I haven't prepared well and don't have any other three-way swivels. Because it's raining, I figure this is as good a time as any to head back home: especially since I have a delicious dinner to prepare. But this won't be my last time fishing at Dotty Lake.
