We'll, what do you guys think about the fair? Many opinions, much feedbacks & some complaints but any die hard angler would not miss such an event. There is much to learn & even more to gain as we save some $$$ to buy things at a great bargain. Personally, I was thrilled to the max when I arrived at the front entrance of the event. There is no other event that attracts so many anglers here. Although I enjoyed it much, I was surprised Shimano, Daiwa, Rapala & even Kepong Tackles was not represented. I don't know why but even if they were not around, PureFishing Malaysia, Megabass, SureCatch & TCE Tackles sure made the event fun with their huge presence.
Megabass as usual was there to promote their line up of super reels. These babies are the equivalent of Ferrari cars. Excellent quality, impeccable designs, innovative features & outstanding price! Haha!
I was looking forward to finding out more info as well as getting a feel for the increasingly popular Penn SpinFisher V reel & here at SureCatch they had an excellent demo unit with cut out sections to reveal the internal mechanisms. First impressions was, it is HEAVY! but if you are an avid salt water angler, this will be your best friend.
Caught up with some sifu at PureFishing Malaysia. Was delighted to meet up with Juan Wei, founder of
Sport Fishing Asia. He was the one who inspired, or should I say 'poisoned' me to go into lure fishing. Learn a lot from this guy. Humble & always willing to share his knowledge. If you are into Sail Fishing at Rompin, he is your go to guide for such a trip.
What does an angler do when they meet with representatives from a fishing tackle distributor? They talk fish, fish & more fish. In this case, I was chatting with Ming from PureFishing Malaysia & by chance, I also met with another friend, Capslock from the Rough & Tough gang. Lets take a photo together!
My favourite Snakehead fishing lures just got 10x more innovative. Instead of just bringing in the regular Berkley Powerbait & Gulp soft plastic lures, PureFishing will been introducing Berkley's Flex line of SPs (Soft Plastics). Also take note is their Havoc line designed by the Bass Pros in USA. Even though I was amazed by the sheer creativity of the Havoc line, I feel the Flex line is what our Malaysian Haruans & Tomans love best. Do note that this range of SPs is non-scented but is made up with incredible flex & action. The make up quality of these SPs is even better than their Powerbait & Gulp series.
The
Havoc series of SPs is designed by the Bass pros in USA. Here is a sample of one of their baits designed by Bobby Lane, the Hawk Hawg. Designed to be rigged Texas or Carolina style. See how much action this bait will generate even if it were to be retrieved slowly.
Something innovative is brewing too with the groundbait manufacturers, this caught my attention. No thanks to the ever complicated nature of freshwater paypond fishing, the distributors will pack everything into a convenient package with printed user instructions on how to mix them up for specific fishes. Want to catch Patin? Buy this one. Rohu? Buy this one. Instant bait for both angler & fishes. Just add water!
Something also caught my attention. I notice Sea Tackle was promoting Fuji SiC guides at their booth. I came to check on one of the demo machines & was impressed by it. Two pieces of 3kg weight is tied to separate strands of 60lb mono line each going through a normal 'competitor's ring' & a Fuji SiC ring. By continuously applying pressure by sliding the line under tension to the rings, we saw how rapid the heat build up on both rings but the 'competitor ring' with a 60lb mono line was the first to frail & eventually snap due to heat abrasion. You don't want to be fishing with cheap guide rings!
A fishing fair is not complete without Pak Amin to demonstrate his fly tying skills. This is a real sifu & is a regular contributor to Rod & Line magazine. He can whip up a bunch of feathers & animal hair into a potent fly to catch a variety of fishes. All you need to do is cast, cast & cast!
Speaking of Rod & Line magazine, I met Mr C.S. Fong the editor. Most friendly & jovial uncle. He's the man who dedicates much of his time & energy to introducing & promoting what we anglers love. As the popular catch phrase goes, "By angler for angler".
In summary, the fair is a mixed bag of tackles, accessories & everything an outdoor enthusiast loves to own & play with. There was plenty of bargain hunting by anglers as many tries to take advantage of the promotional prices offered by tackle traders. In fact, by the 3rd day of the fair, you'd see what we anglers call frenzy!
To finish this article, I would like to introduce to you, a very special way to catch fish. Bow fishing ladies & gentlemen has arrived in Malaysia. I'm afraid, CnR fishing will be tough with this one. hehehehe...
