Labour Day Weekend
I spent a few hours on the water last weekend trying out a few things. On the first evening, I tried fishing some plastics due to the pseudo-success I had the previous week. This time I Texas-rigged a crawdad (pictured below). Unfortunately, I didn't have any luck- not even a strike. At the end of the evening, I went back to one of my "confidence" baits- a black Rapala popper. Still, no luck. I even tried fishing from the dock at night since there was a full moon. Nothing.
The next day, around noon, I went out on the canoe with my dad despite the fact that it was hot and sunny. Fearing that the fish would be particularly lethargic at this time, I figured my only chance to have any luck was to cover a lot of water. At this point I remembered the guys who were trolling for lake trout on Long Bow Lake in Algonquin park (yes, I realize for the 'purist' bass fisherman trolling is not OK- I promise that once I buy some electronics I'll stop). My dad generously offered to be the 'trolling motor', and I threw in a jointed Rapala crankbait hoping to at least get something, anything. Well, I managed to get a few little guys like the one below- proof that it IS in fact possible to catch fish in the middle of a hot, sunny day. I got them all in the middle of the bay in one particular area, so I figure there must be some kind of structure holding the fish there. Something to remember in the future.
A little bit later I hit the water again with a few of my buddies who came up for the night. We couldn't go in the evening due to our musical commitments, but we spent a good hour and a half on the water from about 4 to 5 30pm. We didn't have any luck- in hindsight we should have gone back to the area where I caught the little guys- but it was a nice change of pace to be fishing with my buddies since I've spent so much time on the water alone this year. Now, time to figure out whether I can squeeze in any more fishing this year before the season ends...
